History can be written in many ways. It can (and usually is) written by the winners. It can be written by guns. It can be written by roses. It can be written by Guns ‘N Roses. Finally, it can be written by… votes! His Majesty, King Billy has asked his Scholars to come up with 5 occasions where voting made history. Read below Citizens!
NUMBER 05. J. F. KENNEDY FOR US PRESIDENT
The 1960 American presidential elections changed the world forever! They featured the first ever television debate of candidates, watched by 70 million people (one that Nixon, unshaven and refusing to get television make-up easily lost). They brought about the Kennedy space vision of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade. And of course they led to the tragic culmination of events in the Dallas assassination.
The final score in popular vote:
J.F Kennedy 34.220.984 – 34.108.157 Nixon
NUMBER 04. QATAR TO HOST THE 2022 WORLD CUP
On December 2, 2010, then FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced that Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup, noting that the committee had decided to “go to new lands”. Unfortunately, these lands were filled with accusations of corruption, slavery and false promises regarding air-conditioned stadiums in the summer hell of Qatar. However, history will be made with the first ever World Cup final to be held in December!
2022 World Cup host vote results final round
Qatar 14 – 8 United States
NUMBER 03. O.J. SIMPSON NOT GUILTY AT THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY
October 3, 1995. The trial of the century ends. Before the verdict, President Bill Clinton is briefed on security measures for possible rioting due to the verdict. An estimated 100 million people worldwide watch or listen to the verdict announcement. Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange decreases by 41% and water usage decreases as people avoid using bathrooms! The verdict, highly disputed, as we all know, is not guilty after less than four hours of jury deliberations.
Jury result: unanimous 12-0 not guilty
NUMBER 02. UK TO LEAVE THE EUROPEAN UNION
“Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” In 16 words, the future of the United Kingdom and Europe in general was rewritten. Although British people are taking the situation rather lightly with anti-Brexit banners like “My mother-in-law lives in Spain. Please don’t make them send her back here”, the situation, as we write now, is still murky and undecided.
The final score in popular vote:
Leave 17.410.742 – Remain 16.141.241
